There are three main fields that cover the total of environmental science--the Institute contributes to each of them with the activities listed below:

Air Protection:

· Physical and chemical composition of primary and secondary aerosols as indicators of the aerosol health and environmental impacts

· Air pollution effect on climate

· Loads and composition of hazardous--and other--air pollutants coming from industrial and energy producing installations

· Physicochemical properties of substances released to the atmosphere

· Methods for determining emission factors

· Local and regional air quality management

Protection of Water Resources:

· Methods for recovery of industrial water from wastewater

· Recovery of biogenic elements from municipal and industrial wastewater

· Applicability of minerals (peats, lignites, clays, bentonites, diatomites) and waste as sorbents of heavy metals and organic pollutants in remediation of water, soil and wastewater

· Methods for lakes and anthropogenic reservoirs restoration

Earth Surface Protection:

· Physicochemical properties of waste

· Environmental effects of point and surface land contamination--e.g., by waste dumps

· Neutralization and recovery of waste

· Periods of adverse activity of solid industrial waste in the environment; guidelines for safe use and dumping

· Measures against adverse environmental effects of waste

· Theoretical bases for soilless--natural and technological -- reclamation of derelict industrial lands such as:

    • Excavations after open-pit mining of sand, gravel clay, and loam
    • Waste dumps after mining and processing of hard coal, subsidence troughs and settling basins
    • Waste dumps after excavation and processing of zinc, lead and iron ores
    • Waste dumps and settling basins after power industry activities
    • Waste dumps and settling basins after soda production (Mątwy)
    • Dumped overburden from brown coal deposits after open-pit mining (Turów, Żary, Konin)
    • Lands contaminated and chemically transformed by gases (SO2, NOx, PAH) or dusts emitted to the atmosphere

· Chemical sequential extraction in determination of forms of chemical binding of metals in waste and other environmental samples

· Formation of magnetic and geochemical technogenic anomalies

· Magnetic susceptibility of soil as indicator of industrial contamination

· Use of geothermal energy and waste heat from power plant cooling water for heating soil for the agricultural purposes

In cooperation with industry, administrative units, planning and design offices, etc., the Institute carries out contracted works:

· Monitoring of selected substances in atmospheric air (Hg, PM1, PM2.5, VOC, OC/EC), calibration and inter-calibration of samplers

· Implementation of new techniques for air pollution monitoring

· Environmental expertises to support investment processes or activity of industrial installations

· Techniques for protection of particular components of the environment

· Preparation of documentation to support environmental decision making for companies and industrial plants

· Evaluation of quality of particular components of the environment

· Guidelines for waste management

· Actual and suspected environmental impacts of existing and projected, active and inactive industrial facilities

· Reclamation of waste dumps and derelict industrial terrains

The Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences:

Issues its own periodicals:

· Archives of Environmental Protection, a quarterly, appearing from May 1975 (up to 2006--Archiwum Ochrony Środowiska), publishes original scientific works; since 2006 mentioned by Thompson Scientific in Biological Abstracts and BIOSIS Preview

· Prace i Studia (Works and Studies)--appearing from February 1969, publishes doctoral and habilitation (post-doctoral) dissertation theses and monographs

Cooperates with foreign scientific institutions--coordinates and realises international scientific projects (MAGPROX, SOWA, E2SP, COST 633, SAFEMANMIN)

Holds and co-organises conferences (Air Protection in Theory and Practice--every other year since 1996; Ion Chromatography--a Modern Method for Determination of Anions and Cations in Waters and Wastewaters; International Symposium on Soil, Sediment and Dust Magnetism--SoilSEDUMA)

Posses modern laboratory equipment (gas and ion chromatographs, spectrometers ED-XRF, FTIR, ICP-MS, FAAS, specialized instrumentation for sampling and physicochemical analyses of suspended dust)

Has accredited laboratory (since 2008) that analyses environmental samples as well as substances emitted from industrial processes in situ.

Workers of the Institute deliver lectures at many Silesian universities and are lecturers at the Silesian Environmental Postgraduate Study whose co-organizer is the Institute is.
