Department of Air Protection - Pollution Immission Team

Information about the Department

The research and application projects carried out by the Pollutant Imissions Group of the Air Pollution Control Department concern the physicochemical properties of aerosols emitted by industrial processes and the study of primary and secondary aerosols in atmospheric air. The scope of these studies also includes identifying the sources of aerosols and investigating the gas transformation processes of the precursors of solid particles.

Research is carried out within the framework of statutory activities and individual projects funded by the National Science Centre.

Work is currently underway to create a Polish infrastructure for aerosol and trace gas research within the framework of the ACTRIS IMP project (ACTRIS PL national consortium). Together with IGF PAN and IMWM PIB, construction of a research station in Racibórz has begun. The team's equipment is also used in campaign measurements related to the assessment of pollutant background for new investments or the assessment of immission distribution in areas with social conflicts due to air pollution.

Cooperation offer

As part of its work with the business community, the team conducts research and expert opinion on the requirements of environmental permitting processes, including the construction and operation phases of the facility and the assessment of fugitive emissions from industrial and municipal sources and road infrastructure. Team members work with local governments and state institutions on broadly understood environmental education and support for air quality management systems. The team has the infrastructure to conduct reference measurement comparison tests and calibrate low-cost PM measurement equipment. We offer measurement campaigns with reference monitoring methods and indicative measurements.

Scientific achievements

Participation in national and international projects:

  • Characteristics of the factors influencing the concentration level and chemical composition of selected suspended dust fractions with regard to the environmental health risk of the inhabitants of urban-industrial agglomerations - COST / 87/2006 MNiSzW Special research project, 2006-2008,
  • Projects of the Environment and Health Research Network.
  • Aerosols and health hazards in cardiovascular and respiratory diseases,
  • Environmental threats to children's health,
  • Air Quality Information System in the Polish-Czech Border Area in the Silesia and Moravia Region, AIR SILESIA, foreign partner: Czech Republic (CHMU, ZU, VSB) INTERREG PL CZ, co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as an international project in the period 2010-2013.
  • The impact of climate change on the environment, the economy and society (changes, effects and ways to limit them, conclusions for science, technical practise and economic planning) "I Priority Axis of the Operational Programme Innovative Economy, Measure 1.3.1. co-financed by the European Union from the European Development Fund Regional (Task 2), called the "CLIMATE Project". Task entitled: "Assessment of air quality in Poland and its impact on the quality of life". Project duration from 22 September 2009 - until 31 May 2012.
  • H2020 project - ACTRIS 2 (European Research Infrastructure for the Observation of Aerosols, Clouds and Trace Gases) (national consortium) completed 2016-2019, continued at ACTRIS IMP. The project is included in the Eoropean 1st National Road Map of Key Research Infrastructure.
