Department of Waste Management and Environmental Analyzes

Information about the Department

The department specialises in the following research topics:

  • Transformations and mobility of metals / metalloids, e.g. As, Sb, Cr, Tl, Te, Ge and their speciation forms in the water-soil-soil environment using the ICP-MS method and the combined HPLC-ICP-MS technique (team of Magdalena Jabłońska-Czapla D.Sc., Associate Professor, Prof. IEE PAS);
  • Mobility of selected Technology Critical Elements (TCE) and their speciation forms in soils in areas associated with the storage and processing of e-waste (team of Magdalena Jabłońska-Czapla D.Sc., Associate Professor, Prof. IEE PAS);
  • Use of natural and waste resources in the removal of pollutants from water and wastewater by adsorption methods and the effects of physical and chemical modification of raw materials on their adsorption capacity (team of Joanna Kyzioł-Komosińska Full Professor);
  • Research into the properties of chitosan-based materials and the possibility of using them to remove anions from water ( Full Professor Joanna Kyzioł-Komosińska's team);
  • Transport and mobility of heavy metal ions and radioactive elements under the conditions of the aeration and saturation zone (team of Joanna Kyzioł-Komosińska Full Professor ;
  • Investigation of selected indicator substances in environmental samples using ion chromatographic methods (team of Rajmund Michalski Full Professor);
  • New applications of ion chromatography and related techniques in speciation and chemical analysis (team of Rajmund Michalski Full Professor ).

Cooperation offer

  • Studies on the content and mobility of metals / metalloids and their speciation forms in soils, waters, soil sediments.
  • Studies on the physicochemical and adsorption properties of minerals and waste materials.
  • Research on the possibility of using natural and waste materials in the removal of pollutants from water and wastewater.
  • Investigations of selected non-normalised ionic substances (including chlorates (VII), amines, carboxylic acids) in environmental samples.

Scientific achievements

  • In recent years, staff members have been involved in the implementation of NCN projects on topical issues of environmental protection and technology, including the behaviour of metal nanoparticles, especially silver, in the water-soil environment, the presence and mobility of selected critical elements (TCE - Technology Critical Elements) and their form speciation in the areas of e-waste storage and processing.
  • Currently, the department cooperates with the Silesian University of Technology, the Lublin University of Technology, the AGH University of Science and Technology and the Science and Technology Park "EkoEnergia-Woda-Security" in Katowice.
  • In addition, within the framework of the Agreement on Scientific Cooperation between the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Romanian Academy of Sciences, the Department cooperates with the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj Napoca, Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Department of Food Science. Project leader: at IEE PAS: Rajmund Michalski Full Professor, abroad: Prof. Edward Muntean.
